Snowy conditions on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 78 led to chain-reaction pileups involving dozens of vehicles Thursday morning.

The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on the westbound side of the turnpike, with 35 vehicles piled up about 50 miles west of Philadelphia, between the Morgantown and Reading exits, turnpike officials said. Officials worked to clear the resulting four-mile backup, turning motorists back to Morgantown and waiving their tolls.

Another 25 to 30 vehicles piled up on the nearby westbound Interstate 78 in a separate incident, shutting down 5 lanes.

No deaths were reported, but some 10 people from the turnpike crash and another 25 people from the interstate were taken to hospitals. Trooper David Beohm said another 44 people were treated at the scene of the interstate crash.

The closed lanes on Interstate 78 were reopened after 3 p.m., and the turnpike was cleared at 5:15 p.m.
