A Michigan judge determined there was enough evidence for Theodore Wafer, the Detroit-area homeowner who shot and killed Renisha McBride, to stand trial.

Wafer, who has claimed self-defense, has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. He shot and killed McBride, 19, on his front porch when she approached his house following a car crash on November 2.

“He chose to shoot rather than not answer the door," said Judge David Turfe of the 20th District Court in issuing his decision.

Turfe referenced testimony from Carmen Beasley, an eyewitness who said she spoke with McBride after the crash, about three hours before the teen was killed at Wafer's door.

Beasley described McBride as disoriented and intoxicated -- her toxicology report showed she had a blood alcohol level of .218 and marijuana in her system when she died -- but not violent or agressive.

Defense attorneys said there was no evidence Wafer, 54, intended to kill McBride, but was in fear for his safety.
