Syrian government airstrikes in the northern city of Aleppo on Sunday and Monday are responsible for the deaths of more than 100 people.

The airstrikes during those two days inflicted the heaviest damage Aleppo has so far experienced in the Syrian civil war.

Violence touched other areas of Syria on Tuesday as well, including suburban Damascus, central Homs province, and southern Daraa. The increase in combat between government forces and the rebels has been attributed to an attempt by both sides to gain the upper hand in advance of UN-brokered negotiations set to begin January 22 in Montreux, Switzerland.

Syria has been in the throes of a civil war for the past 33 months which has claimed at least 100,000 lives.
