Dec. 4 (UPI)-- Thousands of demonstrators protested in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa on Sunday to contest the announced winner of the November 24 presidential election.

The electoral institute of Honduras announced National Party candidate Juan Orlando Hernandez won the election by 37% of the vote. In second place, left-wing Free Party candidate Xiomara Castro lost with 29% of the vote.

Castro led a protest on Sunday in the capital against an election her party deemed a "fraud." Thousands of leftist supporters, many wearing red and waving red flags, walked with Castro and her husband, former president Manuel Zelaya. The Free Party is challenging the election results by demanding a recount. International observers believe the count was accurate.
