Maui shark attacks kill fisherman

Dec. 3 (UPI) -- A man was killed Monday in the waters off Maui in the second shark attack on the Hawaiian island in a week.

Patrick Briney, 57, was bit in the leg while fishing from his kayak near Kihei Beach. His friend tried to apply a tourniquet to his leg and called for help. People aboard a nearby charter boat rushed him back to the dock, but Briney died on the way.

"They went out fishing off their kayaks and the gentleman that got bit had his feet dangling in the water and the shark basically came and took one of his feet, and if not both of them," said Capt. Jon Jon, a tour operator for Local Fishing Knowledge. "Before getting him to shore, he already lost a lot of blood and very unfortunate, they couldn't save him."

The Department of Land and Natural Resources and Maui police said Briney was a part time resident of Maui and split his time between Hawaii and Stevenson, Wash.

He had been fishing between the tiny islands of Makena and Molokini, off Maui's shore, in a popular kayak fishing spot.

"The tiger sharks come accustomed to seeing a lot of kayak fisherman and know a lot of food coming off of there," Jon said.

Monday's deadly incident was the second shark attack this week. A woman was bit at Keawakapu Beach, just south of Kihei, on Friday.

So far this year, there have been 13 shark attacks in Hawaii, eight on Maui.

Beaches will reopen at noon Tuesday if no sharks are spotted.
