Amtrak derailment injures 4

A train from New Orleans to New York derailed Monday morning near Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Four people were injured and more than 200 stranded an an Amtrak train derailed early Monday morning near Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Seven cars went off the track shortly after midnight at Cedar Crest at Falling Creek Road in Spartanburg County, according to Westview Fire Capt. Derrick Miller. Amtrak said the train was en route from New Orleans to New York.

While the cars did not flip over, four people were injured and treated at a hospital. After an eight hour delay, charter buses were brought in to transport the 207 passengers, including those treated, to their final destinations in Charlotte, Charlottesville and Washington D.C.

"The train started to buck, started to twist," said Barbara Gray, who was aboard the train. "Some of us were falling out of our chairs."

Other trains were able to pass through the area, and Norfolk Southern, which operates the railroad tracks, said the tracks are inspected every day.
