California company recalls products sold at Trader Joe's, Walgreens for E.coli contamination

(UPI) -- Glass Onion Catering of Richmond, Calif., is voluntarily recalling ready-to-eat salads and wraps because they may be contaminated with E. coli after 26 people fell ill across three states.

According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the FDA, Atherstone Foods, Glass Onion's parent company, is recalling 181,620 pounds of salads and sandwiches containing cooked chicken and ham. The products were supplied to retailers including Trader Joe's, Walgreens and Whole Foods.

The products had best by dates of September 23 through November 6. The food products were shipped to California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Texas.

E. coli causes diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. While adults can recover within a week, young children and the elderly can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, which can lead to kidney damage and death.

Consumers who purchased these products have been urged to return them to the place of purchase.
