(UPI) -- President Obama’s proposed plan to change the Marine Corps’ uniform hats in order to create a “unisex” appearance has some people calling the new-look covers “girly.”

“We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the DoD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats!” a senior Marine told the New York Post. “The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous.

The new hats have a line to them look just as good on female marines as they do on males. “The Marine Corps is being ‘encouraged’ by DoD to standardize on a unisex/universal dress and service cap,” according to a memo. “None of the [members] liked the idea of a universal cover for all Marines.”

The new cap has been named the “Dan Daly” after a World War I sergeant who won the Medal of Honor twice.

“The Dan Daly cap looks too French, and the last people we want to associate our Marines with would be the French military,” wrote one commenter on the Marine Times website.

“Why are we even focused on this while we are laying troops off for no budget?” another commenter asked.

The hats are just in the proposal stage and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos will make the final decision.
