Google celebrates first parachute jump with doodle

(UPI) -- Google's interactive doodle for Tuesday is a sweetly animated tribute to the very first parachute jump in history.

Frenchman André-Jacques Garnerin invented the frameless parachute, using a balloon to lift him approximately 3,000 feet above Paris on Oct. 22, 1797.

Garnerin would open the silk parachute, which resembled an closed umbrella when collapsed, then sever the rope connecting the balloon to his basket.

Upon his landing, Garnerin was given the title Official Aeronaut of France. He later toured England to complete several demonstrations of his revolutionary flights, and his student, and later wife, Jeanne Geneviève Labrosse became the first female parachutist.

Garnerin died in 1823 at the age of 54, when he was hit by a falling beam while constructing another balloon.
