Jim Leyland stepping down as Detroit Tigers manager

Jim Leyland will step down as Tigers manager after eight years with the team, according to Ken Rosenthal.

(UPI) -- A recent report shows that Jim Leyland, manager of the Detroit Tigers, will step down from his post after eight years with the team.

Leyland announced his retirement to his players Saturday after the team's loss to Boston, and will make an official announcement at a news conference late Monday morning.

Leyland, 68, said that it was time for someone younger to take his place. He has spent the past 22 years managing Pittsburgh, Florida, Colorado and Detroit, taking away three pennants and a championship. He has been one of the most successful managers in baseball.
