Tropical Storm Octave weakens by Mexico's Baja California coast

Tropical Storm Octave is expected to become a tropical depression by Tuesday.

(UPI) -- Tropical Storm Octave weakened as it advanced toward Baja California in Mexico.

By Sunday afternoon Octave was about 85 miles southwest of Cabo San Lazaro, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

“Additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Octave could become a tropical depression on Tuesday by the time it nears the Baja California Peninsula,” the center said.

In the meantime, tropical storm warnings were issued from Santa Fe to Punta Abreojos in Mexico. Winds of at least 39 mph and 3 to 6 inches of rain are expected, according to the center.
