(UPI) -- Reggie Wayne became just the ninth player in NFL history to reach 1,000 career receptions during the San Diego Chargers 19-9 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night.

Wayne entered Monday night’s game four catches shy of 1,000 and reached the milestone by hauling in a 21-yard catch in the fourth quarter. He added one more catch on the evening and finished with 1,001 catches overall.

Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzalez, Marvin Harrison, Cris Carter, Tim Brown, Terrell Owens, Isaac Bruce and Hines Ward are the only other members of the NFL’s 1,000-catch club. Wayne is 23 catches behind Bruce and 101 grabs behind lifetime Colt Harrison.

The 34-year-old is on pace for 88 receptions in 2013. Were he to hit that mark, Wayne would end the season with 1,056 catches, good for seventh place on the NFL’s all-time list.

Wayne’s first catch came way back in 2001 on a pass from Peyton Manning. Second-year quarterback Andrew Luck threw him his record-setting ball on Monday.

It’s unclear how long he will continue playing.

"As soon as I start waking up on a consistent basis and my bones crack and ache and I put that window in there, that’s the day I should probably stop playing," Wayne said. "I’m just taking it one year at a time. I feel good now."

Rice is the all-time leader in receptions with 1,549 career catches.
