Loudest stadium record broken by Chiefs fans

(UPI) -- The Guinness World Records crowned a new stadium crowd for making a ton of noise.

Fans at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City cheered their way to a new record for the loudest crowd noise in an outdoor stadium as the Chiefs beat the Oakland Raiders 24-7 on Sunday.

Noise at the stadium reached 137.5 decibels, crushing the previous record of 136.6 decibels set earlier this season by Seattle Seahawks fans at CenturyLink Field.

Guinness adjudicator Philip Robertson was at the stadium Sunday and congratulated Chiefs fans for their teamwork in breaking the record.

"In the fourth quarter, they got to 135.4, and that's where we thought they were going to finish," Robertson said. "Heads dropped, but then the fans really started working together."

But as fun as setting the record might have been for fans, the noise -- comparable to a jet engine at 100 feet -- was distracting for the players.

“The way the crowd was going, that was tough,” Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith said. “I was sitting there on the sideline, and I could tell, it was hard environment to execute in.”
