David Boreanaz sent "Bones" fans into hysterics last year when he hinted on Twitter that 2012's eighth season could be "quite possibly the last for #Bones."

"Let's put this in sports terms. I'm a free agent after this season. So the 'Bones' fair well [sic] tour is in full-swing," he wrote at the time. "You must always keep your options open and ready for New challenges. The fear is the unknown and that's exciting."

Eventually, the 43-year-old actor agreed to sign on through season 9, which runs through May 2014.

But the drama does lend credence to a new report from Radar Online, who spoke to an unnamed production sources about Boreanaz's supposedly imminent departure from the show.

“David is telling friends that it’s his last season,” one source told the site.

Radar also reported that is Boreanaz leaves, Fox execs are unlikely to continue the show without him.

“The show makes a lot of money, but re-casting a lead is always a challenge,” the source said. “The network could throw in the towel if David can’t be signed for more seasons after this one.” "Bones" airs Monday nights at 8 ET.
