The man, 37-year-old Reginald Brown, was apprehended nearby on Atlanta Highway, and investigators say attempted murder charges against him are pending. Brown also received a charge of certain person forbidden to carry a pistol.

The shooting is said to be domestic-violence related. He is being held in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on $500,000 bond.

The shooting occurred near a maintenance building on campus, away from students. Maintenance workers at the scene reported hearing about seven or eight gunshots and the sound of squealing tires.

Alabama Christian Academy, a Church of Christ school near Faulkner, was placed on lockdown for a brief period of time Tuesday. The lockdown was later lifted.

Some Faulkner students say they received a text message, saying, "(Active Shooter on Campus) Emergency! Armed person on campus. Go to nearest room and lock door. If off campus, do not enter campus. Follow instructions from auth."

Campus leaders have confirmed that many students and faculty never received the alert, however.

An email sent from university President Jean-Noel Thompson to numerous Faulkner.edu email addresses, said that "most, if not all, JSL faculty, staff, and students did not receive the Eagle Alert messages." An internal probe is underway to determine the cause of the issue.

Faulkner University issued the following statement after the shooting:

A shooting occurred on our Montgomery campus today. The suspect has been apprehended and all offices and classes are operating on their normal schedules. In what appears to have been a domestic situation, a contract employee was injured in the shooting and has been taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her condition is not known at this time. The Montgomery Police Department is following up on the incident. At no time were any students involved in the incident. Faulkner University asks everyone to be in prayer for the victim and offers its sincere gratitude to campus security and law enforcement officers for their rapid response.
