German actress Diane Kruger told Marie Claire U.K. that accepting the American way and going to therapy helped her deal with the demons of her past.

"When I turned thirty I realized I was an idiot. I didn't know s**t about anything," the actress told the magazine. "My friends ask, 'What's wrong with you?' But here everyone talks about [therapy], and I really like that about America. Therapy's not about getting help. It's facilitating yourself to deal better with life in general."

The 36-year-old "Inglourious Basterds" star added that speaking to therapists had completely changed the way she deals with men and relationships.

"I'm sure I punished many boys for my lack of a father figure. And I'm sure I dated many men who were much older than the men I should have been dating," she said.

"But at the end of the day, I'm not bitter. I love men. I want a family myself. I'm not angry with him anymore."

Krueger, who has been dating fellow actor Joshua Jackson since 2006, added that over time she learned that relationships take a lot of work and that they're all about timing.

"All relationships are hard. It doesn't matter what job you have, or how famous or miserable or poor you are. It's about commitment," she said, adding, "The hard part is the timing. When you meet someone, are you ready to make them your number one priority? There's never going to be a role more interesting than my own life. I'm grateful that I met a person who feels the same not just about me, but also about our relationship. But therapy helps, too."
