The newborn baby that was rescued from a sewer pipe in China on Saturday was returned to his mother Wednesday.
Scotsman reported Chinese authorities have concluded that the infant was trapped in the pipe by accident and the 22-year-old mother will face no charges.
Even though the mother waited until Monday to come forward and admit that the baby was hers officials said she acted out of fear and eventually told the truth.
When interviewed about the incident, the woman told police she had gotten pregnant after having a brief affair with a man and had hidden her condition from her parents because she was ashamed and couldn't afford and abortion. She also explained that the baby had accidentally slipped into the squat toilet immediately after she gave birth and that she called for help, although she didn't admit she was the baby's mother.
