“I thought they were carrying rugs, but as they walked past, I saw they were enormous shells," she said. "I was really scared. As they were walking past, my little girl was alongside them. ... I just think they’re idiots.”

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said it was impossible to tell from the photograph whether the shells were live or practice rounds, but warned that unexploded shells could be very unstable.

"The men should immediately contact the police who will arrange for bomb disposal experts to examine the shells," said the statement. The MOD urged anyone who recognized the men pictured to contact the police.

The MOD noted that the parks public walkways and areas "are cleared of military objects, including shells, before access is permitted." The statement went on to say that members of the public visiting the ranges must remain on designated pathways and refrain from touching or removing any military objects they may find.
