Jim Carrey plays both Charlton Heston and an old-school country singer named Lonesome Earl in a new Funny or Die video mocking the legendary actor's famous declaration that gun control supporters would have to pry his gun "from my cold, dead hands."
"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey, as Lonesome Earl, sings in the video, flanked by men dressed as Gandhi, John Lennon and Abraham Lincoln.
Carrey also links Heston's enthusiasm for guns with his need to compensate for something below-the-belt.
"You're a big, big man with a little bitty gland, so you need something bigger with a hairpin trigger," Lonesome Earl sings.
“I find the gun problem frustrating and ‘Cold Dead Hand’ is my fun little way of expressing that frustration," Carrey said in a statement about the video.
