With the first feature film exclusive for a gaming platform — Xbox Live's Video app — Microsoft joins Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and others in exclusive online content distribution. British indie comedy "Pulp" premieres on Xbox March 4.

The film centers on a comic book writer forced to help the police take down a money laundering drug cartel. It was well-received on the film festival circuit last year, but creator Adam Handy says the multimillion-dollar cost of a traditional theatrical release was too expensive a risk for UK distributors to take on a movie with no "bankable stars."

"At the top end of the indie film business the UK is still pretty healthy, but it's the middle tier and the lower budget tier that's struggling. Where they would have been released straight to DVD, the opportunities for doing that have really declined."

For 77 million Xbox 360 owners, "it's a great fit," said Xbox Live product manager Pav Bhardwaj. "The film is really well aligned with our audience." Microsoft says it will be distributing more films this way in the future.

You can get a feel for what Pulp offers by watching the foul-mouthed clip below. If you have an Xbox account you can buy it in SD for 1120 Microsoft Points ($14.75), or the HD version for 1420 Microsoft Points ($17.75).
