While Sen. John McCain has been openly critical of Susan Rice as the president's possible pick for secretary of state, the Arizona senator and many of his Republican colleagues favor Kerry as a "familiar" alternative.
Kerry probably turned "beet red" because, as the New York Times reported Thursday, the Massachusetts senator "cannot be seen as lending anything but support for Ms. Rice even though his desire for the diplomatic job is well known."
