BERLIN, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- The former head of the Croatian secret police, Josip Perkovic, has told Germany's Deutsche Welle he is innocent in the killing of a dissident.
"I have no connection at all to murders ... I did classic intelligence work, which means protection of Croatian territory," Perkovic told DW in a broadcast interview, but refused to say who was responsible for the killings.
Perkovic is wanted for the 1983 killing of an emigrant dissident in Germany when Croatia was still part of Yugoslavia.
Croatian authorities have decided to extradite Perkovic to Germany, Croatian Times reported.
The Times said the case has been getting attention because Perkovic's son has been an adviser to current Croatian President Ivo Josipovic as well as to the former President Stjepan Mesic.
There has been speculation German Chancellor Angela Merkel declined to visit Croatia at the country's celebration of joining the European Union last July because of the Perkovic case, the Times said.
