Berlin square shows up with Hitler name on Google Maps

BERLIN, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Google said it is investigating why Berlin's Theodor-Heuss-Platz showed up on a Google Maps search under its former name: Adolf-Hitler-Platz.

A Google Maps search for Theodor-Heuss-Platz brought up an image of the square Thursday with the label bearing the Nazi dictator's name, but the error had been corrected when the same search was attempted Friday, TheLocal.de reported.

"We were made aware of an incorrect and inappropriate Berlin street name on Google Maps and corrected this as quickly as was possible," Google said in a statement. "We apologize for the error."

Google said officials are investigating how the wrong name ended up on the map.

The square was dubbed Adolf-Hitler-Platz in 1933, but the name was changed to Reichskanzlerplatz in 1947 and renamed in honor of Theodor Heuss, the first German federal president, in 1963.
