CAIRO, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Al-Azhar University students clashed with security forces in Cairo after they tried to protest in the Rabaa al-Adaweya Square, authorities said.

The students had blocked a road and were calling for the return of former president Mohamed Morsi.

The protesters were also calling for the release of students who were allegedly arrested during previous demonstrations, al-Masry al-Youm reported.

The students chanted "Morsi is my president" and "The Interior Ministry officers are slugs."

As a result of the protest, traffic came to a complete stop.

Security forces used tear gas to disperse the students, who hurled stones back at the officers, al-Masry al-Youm reported.
