Former high-level Chinese official to appeal corruption conviction

BEIJING, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- A former high-level Chinese Communist Party official says he will appeal his corruption and abuse of power convictions.

Bo Xilai said his conviction Sunday by a court in eastern China "seriously contradicts the facts and is unfair," CNN reported Monday, citing a source with knowledge of the case.

He was found guilty of taking bribes, embezzlement and abuse of power.

Bo's punishment ranged from a life sentence for bribery to seven years for abuse of power.

The convictions marked a dramatic fall for the man once considered a rising star in the Communist Party and the Chinese government.

His late father, Bo Yibo, was a colleague of Chairman Mao Zedong and the late leader Deng Xiaoping. Bo Xilai had served in a series of government roles that allowed him to progress from a city mayor and provincial governor to a member of the policy-making Politburo.
