PRISTINA, Kosovo, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A former Kosovo insurgent has been acquitted for the second time of torturing prisoners during a conflict with Serbia in the late 1990s, officials say.
A court in the Kosovar capital of Pristina declared Fatmir Limaj, a former member of the Kosovo Liberation Army, not guilty due to a lack of evidence, Tanjug news agency reported Thursday.
He had been charged with ordering and participating in the torture of Serbian troops and police officers, as well as Serb and Albanian citizens at a prison camp in Klecka.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia acquitted Limaj of the same charges three years ago.
The trial panel comprised of judges from Kosovo and the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) acquitted Limaj because most of the evidence against came from the journal of Agim Zogaj, who was found hanged in a park in Germany in 2011.
The judges also acquitted nine other defendants tried with Limaj.
