3 policemen killed, 1 injured in Russia

CHANKO, Russia, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Three policemen were killed and one wounded when their squad car was attacked Thursday in the Botlikhsky district of the Russian Republic of Dagestan.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the police officers as they sat in their car in the village of Chanko, RIA Novosti reported.

"At about 1:00 p.m. Moscow time unidentified assailants attacked a police patrol in the Botlikhsky district, near the village of Chanko. Three policemen were killed, one was wounded," said a statement from the regional interior ministry. "At present we have taken measures to search for the attackers. Additional forces have been brought up to the area of ​​the attack."

RIA Novosti said attacks on law enforcement officials are frequent in the Dagestan region. There are believed to be about 12 militant groups operating the the area.
