5.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Bulgaria

PERNIK, Bulgaria, May 22 (UPI) -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook western Bulgaria Tuesday, officials said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

B92 reported the epicenter of the shallow temblor was near Pernik, about 15 miles west of Sofia.

The earthquake hit just after 3 a.m. and reportedly was followed by aftershocks.

Anxious residents of Pernik, Sofia and other towns spent the rest of the night outdoors after the quake struck.

The earthquake could be felt in neighboring countries, including Serbia, B92 said.

Local media reported the last earthquake of this strength in Bulgaria was in 1917.
