KHARTOUM, Sudan, April 19 (UPI) -- Fighting is the only way to resolve the differences between Sudan and South Sudan, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said Thursday.

Bashir told an audience in North Kordofan state recent fighting over the oil rich town of Heglig "will not be the end, and we have determined to resolve our matters completely in the battlefield," China's Xinhua news agency reported.

He said his goal is to end the rule in the south of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.

"We made a mistake historically to enable the SPLM to rule the South, but we will correct this mistake," Bashir said.

Earlier this week the U.N. Security Council renewed its call for Sudan to end airstrikes and for South Sudan to withdraw from Heglig.
