Sudan declares South Sudan an enemy

KHARTOUM, Sudan, April 17 (UPI) -- The Sudanese Parliament unanimously approved a resolution calling South Sudan "an enemy," an information ministry official said Tuesday.

The official told the BBC the resolution calls on all Sudanese state agencies to treat South Sudan as an enemy.

"It is not the people of the south but the government that is the real enemy," said Rabbie Abd al-Attie, a senior adviser to Sudan's information minister. He said the resolution is linked to the south's seizure last week of the Heglig oil field.

Until April 8, Heglig was firmly under Khartoum's control and the oil field provided more than half of Sudan's oil. Heglig is internationally accepted to be part of Sudanese territory even though the border area has yet to be determined.

South Sudan seceded from Sudan last year but a number of major disputes remain.
