Rebels join the hostilities in Sudan

KADUQLI, Sudan, April 18 (UPI) -- Fighting between Sudan and South Sudan over the Heglig oil fields has fired up rebels in South Kordofan north of the border, observers said.

The state's governor said the rebels are taking advantage of the oil field clashes to fight their own battles and accused South Sudan of supporting them, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Gov. Ahmad Haroun said rebels have shelled the town of Talodi in the Nuba Mountains where many are without electricity and one fire burnt for days.

"These rockets and ammunition and supplies come from South Sudan, Haroun said. "The border is very near. They provide all the weapons."

South Sudan has denied the charge.

The United Nations estimated that hundreds of thousands could flee the Nuba Mountains because of the fighting.

In a related development a top U.N. official condemned indiscriminate bombing raids by Sudan that resulted in civilian casualties in the South.

Navi Pillay, the U.N.'s high commissioner for human rights, said the bombings have intensified in the past week.

"Such deplorable attacks must stop immediately," she said.
