University police received a call reporting shots fired, and officers said they found the woman with a gunshot wound to her upper body, according to the Dover Police statement.

The woman, who was not publicly identified, was not a student of the university and was reportedly a resident of Wilmington, which is about 50 miles north of Delaware State University, police said.

"Officers rendered aid to the victim and she was transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment," police said in the statement. "Tragically, the 18-year-old died at the hospital as a result of her injuries."

Dover Police have launched a homicide investigation, and officers are cooperating with Delaware State University Police on the incident, officials said.

"The DSU Police Department and staff will continue to take all necessary actions to ensure the health and well-being of our campus community," police said.
