Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Police in upstate New York have identified four people who were found dead this week in their basement apartment.

The victims in the quadruple homicide are Shanise Myers, 5, Jeremiah Myers, 11, Shanta Myers, 36, and Brandi Mells, 22, Troy, N.Y., police said.

Shanta Myers, the children's mother, was in a relationship with Mells, according to police, who have asked the public to provide information to help find whoever is responsible for the deaths.

Troy police Chief James Tedesco said the killings are "the work of a savage," and said a person who commits such an act is capable anything. The police chief added the deaths were not random, and the public is not in imminent danger.

Troy Middle School, where the children attended classes, offered grief counseling Friday.

"Hearts are broken and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and loved ones during this terribly troubling time," the school district said in a statement.
