Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A U.S. service member died and another sustained injuries in a roadside blast in Iraq, U.S. military officials said Monday.

A news release from Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition battling the Islamic State in Iraq, reported an improvised explosive device hit their vehicle Sunday. The mission withheld identifying information about the service members, but Pentagon spokesman Maj. Adrian Rankine-Galloway told CNN they were both from the United States.

"The names and circumstances surrounding the incident are being held pending notification of next of kin, and will be released at the discretion of the pertinent national authorities," the coalition statement said.

More than 5,000 U.S. troops are in Iraq as part of Inherent Resolve, and 45 Americans have died in the mission.
