Congress returns to face deadlines on DACA program, federal budget

Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Deadlines on the federal budget and immigration reform are looming for congressional leaders as they return to Capitol Hill Tuesday from summer recess.

Congressional leaders are scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Trump is expected to announce a six-month window for Congress to develop a potential replacement plan for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era program that grants work permits and legal documents to immigrants brought to the United States as children without proper documentation.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will hold a news briefing Tuesday on the plan.

Trump tweeted Tuesday, "Congress, get ready to do your job - DACA!"

Congress also faces a potential budget crisis before the start of the federal fiscal year on Oct. 1. Trump has threatened a government shutdown if the new budget doesn't provide funding for his long-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In one of Congress' first actions this week, leaders are expected to approve relief funding for areas of Texas and Louisiana still reeling from Hurricane Harvey. A mid-week $7.85 billion relief package will likely serve as a down payment in what could be an overall $150 billion aid package.
