Trump, Pence cancel events after baseball practice shooting

June 14 (UPI) -- Authorities ramped up security at the White House and Congress, and President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence canceled scheduled events Wednesday after a gunman opened fire on congressional Republicans.

Capitol Police blocked off the area surrounding the main entrances to the House and Senate sections of the Capitol building. Only members of Congress were allowed to enter while others were being sent through the visitors' area, Politico reported.

Trump canceled his speech later on Wednesday at the Department of Labor, while Pence canceled an earlier speech at the National Association of Home Builders, ABC News reported.

Trump is expected to make a public statement on the shooting around 11:30 p.m. from the White House.

"The vice president and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected," Trump said in a statement.

Votes in the House have been canceled for Wednesday. It is not yet confirmed if the shooting would affect votes in the Senate, CBS News reported.

Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving is scheduled to deliver a briefing at 11:15 a.m. for all members of the House.

A press conference scheduled by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., to discuss a lawsuit against Trump over foreign payments has also been postponed.

The Republican lawmakers on the scene of the shooting include Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who was injured, Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama, Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, Rep. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona, Rep. Jimmy Duncan of Tennessee, Rep. Brad Wenstrup of Ohio, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, Rep. Steven Palazzo of Mississippi and Rep. Steve Pearce of New Mexico.

At least five people were injured in the shooting, including Scalise, the gunman, two Capitol Police officers and a congressional staffer.
