June 13 (UPI) -- Law enforcement officials said they arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a Newport, Ark., police officer.
The manhunt ended late Monday and the unidentified suspect was taken into custody overnight, police said. Police Chief Michael Scudder said the police diving team was called out to search for a weapon believed used in the shooting, KATV-TV, Little Rock, reported.
The search followed the death of Lt. Patrick Weatherford, a 15-year veteran of the police force of Newport, a city northeast of Little Rock. He was shot while making a routine traffic stop near the city's Remmel Park, and died of his injuries after he was hospitalized, WREG-TV, Memphis, reported.
Arkansas State Police led the search for a suspect. Officials said police are not pursuing any other suspects.
