TOMS RIVER, N.J., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Mike Pence, Donald Trump's vice presidential running mate, has called off a campaign appearance he had scheduled for Monday in New Jersey.

The campaign told Fortune magazine that Pence will not appear at the Ocean County Republican Committee's event in Toms River, N.J., saying the event "was canceled last week."

It is not known whether Pence canceled the appearance in New Jersey before or after the release of a video on Friday that shows Trump making crude comments about grabbing women in a conversation with entertainment reporter Billy Bush, then with Access Hollywood.

Pence was scheduled to appear at two events in North Carolina on Monday – a town hall meeting in Charlotte and a rally in the evening in Fletcher. Both were still listed on the campaign's website.

On Saturday, Pence released a statement about Trump's crude comments, saying, "As a husband and father, I was offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump in the 11-year-old video released yesterday. I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them. I am grateful that he has expressed remorse and apologized to the American people. We pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night."

Pence said on CNN on Monday that rumors that he'd considered dropping off the ticket after the release of the video on Friday were "absolutely false," saying it was the "greatest honor" of his life to be chosen to run with Trump and that he'd encouraged Trump to apologize for his remarks about women.
