Austin-area sheriff's deputy fatally shot at home

ROUND ROCK, Texas, July 25 (UPI) -- A Travis County, Texas, sheriff's deputy was shot and killed early Monday morning at his home in Round Rock, just north of Austin.

Sgt. Craig Hutchinson, a 32-year veteran of the force, called the Round Rock Police Department around 1:20 a.m., after he had gone off duty, to report prowlers in his yard.

When police arrived on the scene at 1:36 a.m. they found Hutchinson in the rear of his yard with a gunshot injury. He was transported to Round Rock Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office said the incident appeared to be robbery related and that the deputy wasn't targeted or ambushed.

Hutchinson, who went by the name "Hutch," was scheduled to retire in September.
