By Andrew V. Pestano

ANTIGO, Wis., April 25 (UPI) -- An 18-year-old who opened fire outside of a high school prom and injured two teenagers in Antigo, Wis., died from his injuries.

Police said that at about 11 p.m. local time on Saturday, Jakob Wagner, a former student of Antigo High School, "arrived at the Antigo High School prom with a rifle and began shooting while outside the entrance of the building."

Nearby police officers heard the shots and one officer opened fire on the shooter, who was injured and taken to a nearby hospital where he died Sunday. The victims sustained gunshot wounds that were not life threatening. A female student was released from the hospital, while a male student underwent surgery on Sunday.

"The officer's immediate response prevented further injuries and possible casualties," the Antigo Police Department said in a statement, adding that an initial investigation indicates the gunman acted alone.

Police searched Wagner's home after securing a warrant. Rep. Sean Duffy, a Republican who represents Wisconsin's seventh congressional district, which includes Antigo, praised the police officers' response to the shooting.

"My own daughter attended her high school prom last weekend. As parents, we remind our kids to 'have fun and be safe' but I am as grateful as ever to the men and women in our police force who ensure their safety," Duffy said in a statement.

Emily Fisher, 19, a former classmate of Wagner, said Wagner seemed nice but was socially awkward and had bullying troubles. She said he was picked on, at times violently, in part because of poor hygiene. The bullying occurred through middle school and to a lesser degree throughout high school.

"He was bullied a lot," Fisher told the Wausau Daily Herald. "Ever since we were younger, he was one of the kids you kind of watched out for ... If someone was going to shoot the school, we thought it was going to be him."
