DETROIT, April 24 (UPI) -- Several cases of commercial-grade fireworks stolen from a train traveling between Chicago and Detroit were recovered in a vacant field in southwest Detroit, authorities said Saturday.
An anonymous tipster called Detroit police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded about 1:30 a.m. EDT Saturday and found 31 of the 32 cases weighing 500 pounds, said ATF spokesman Donald Dawkins.
No arrests have been made, he said.
The fireworks were discovered missing Thursday.
The cases included 2.5-inch and 5-inch aerial commercial-grade fireworks shells used in public fireworks displays.
In the past fireworks materials have been used by some criminal suspects, including the Boston Marathon bombers three years ago to construct explosives. Material from commercial-grade fireworks also was used by theater shooter James Holmes in 2012 in Aurora, Colo.
"There is nothing to indicate any acts of terrorism at this time," Dawkins said Friday.
Dawkins said it's possible the thieves took the fireworks to sell them for a profit.
The explosives were on a train of about 100 boxcars, CSW spokesman Rob Doolittle said Friday.
ATF is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the explosives thieves. Tips are being taken by ATF at (313) 202-3400.
