HOUSTON, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush was released from a Houston hospital Tuesday, one week after being admitted for shortness of breath.

The 90-year-old was admitted to Houston's Methodist Hospital on Dec. 23 after experiencing trouble breathing.

He was kept at the hospital for observation as a precaution. Bush's spokesman regularly reported he was in good spirits despite being hospitalized through Christmas Day.

"He is now resting at home, grateful to the doctors and nurses for their superb care," his spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement Tuesday.

Bush, who uses a wheelchair, was hospitalized for two months from November 2012 to January 2013 for complications from bronchitis.

He was elected president in 1988 and is the country's oldest living president.
