LOS ANGELES, May 23 (UPI) -- Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis arrived in Los Angeles Thursday morning to a reception of "Abortion Barbie" posters placed throughout the city.
Davis was scheduled to attend an event in the city when the posters popped up. They show Davis' face on the head of a mostly naked Barbie doll with a plastic baby in her womb. It is inscribed with the words "Hollywood welcomes Abortion Barbie Wendy Davis."
Conservative pundit Erick Erickson dubbed Davis with the sexist moniker after she made a name for herself by filibustering a bill, for 11 hours, that would place stringent restrictions on abortion in Texas. Davis' campaign staff said they spotted at least five posters in the city, including one on the campus of UCLA.
Zac Petkanas,a spokesman for the campaign, accused Republican opponent Greg Abbott's campaign for the offensive displays.
"It seems that Greg Abbott can't let a week go by without showing how out of touch he is with women," he said. "This is just another in a long line of offensive actions and comments by Greg Abbott in an attempt to demean Wendy Davis."
Abbott's campaign denied any knowledge of who made the posters. The San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday evening that conservative political donor Kathryn Stuard.
"It hits people with the truth. The artist is very edgy," said Stuard. "I do support Abbott but the campaign had nothing to do with these [posters]."
