Florida woman dies after vehicle leaves road, sinks in pond

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 11 (UPI) -- The death of a woman in St. Petersburg, Fla., found in a pond with her vehicle, remains under investigation, police said.

James Wolfe said he received a telephone call from his wife Jennifer early Monday, in which she said she drove into a pond and could not open the door of her minivan. Wolfe telephoned 911, then left his home to find his wife, the Tampa Tribune reported Tuesday.

As he drove he found Pinellas Park police searching the pond. A helicopter spotted the submerged van, the newspaper said.

The unconscious 35-year-old woman, a mother of two, was pulled from the vehicle but was pronounced dead at Humana Northside Hospital, police said.

"I definitely thought she would figure out how to get out of the car," James Wolfe later said. "I've never seen her in a situation where she just froze."
