MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Two children died and three others were listed in critical condition after a car they were in crashed into an icy pond in Minnesota, authorities said.
The driver, 23-year-old Marion Guerrido, was able to get out of the vehicle after it ran off a road but the five children were all underwater, some of them up to 45 minutes, investigators said.
Authorities said the car crashed near St. Louis Park Thursday.
Guerrido's 7-year-old son, Alarious Coleman-Guerrido, and her boyfriend's 5-year-old daughter, Zenavia Rennie, died, KARE-TV in Minneapolis reported.
Guerrido's other two children, Aliyana Rennie, 1, and Amani Coleman-Guerrido, 5,and her boyfriend's daughter, 6-year-old Zarihana Rennie, were reported in critical condition.
"[The children] spent significant time in water," State Patrol spokesman Eric Roeske said. "The water is about 9 feet deep. It's incredibly cold. Not freezing, but close."
