WASHINGTON, March 4 (UPI) -- After a 10-1 vote in the D.C. city council Tuesday, possession of an ounce of marijuana or less will only result in a maximum $25 fine.

Prior to this passing, anyone caught with marijuana could end up spending up to six months in jail.

"This is a big step forward for our nation's capital, as well as our nation as a whole," said Mason Tvert of the Marijuana Policy Project in D.C. "Clearly, marijuana prohibition's days are numbered in the United States."
