Man's body recovered from under 50 tons of corn in Wash.

ROY, Wash., Dec. 5 (UPI) -- The body of a 44-year-old man was recovered from under 50 tons of corn in Roy, Wash., after a silo collapsed, spilling the grain, police said.

The silo collapsed Monday afternoon at Wilcox Farms and in the process, damaged two other silos and filled the farm's business offices with corn, the Bellingham Herald reported Wednesday.

Steven Green, a worker at the farm, was outside the silo when it gave way and the corn spilled out. Another worker with Green at the time was able to run to safety, the newspaper said.

Workers were unable to remove the corn to search for Green because it was the only thing keeping the damaged structures from collapsing further, said South Pierce Fire & Rescue Chief Bob Vellias.

Rescue workers Wednesday brought in a demolition excavator that had a 400-square-foot net that was pushed against the silo to prevent it from collapsing further as they removed the corn, the Herald reported.

Crews recovered Green's body Wednesday. He was married and had four children.

It was unclear what caused the silo to collapse.
