Ex-headmaster of Delaware prep school arrested on child porn charges

WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A former headmaster of a private college preparatory school in Delaware was arrested Friday on 25 child pornography charges, authorities said.

The office of state Attorney General Beau Biden said in a release the Delaware Child Predator Task Force had arranged for Christopher Wheeler to turn himself in to state police.

Wheeler was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court via videophone and was taken to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $1.5 million cash bail, the attorney general's office said.

An arrest warrant was issued for Wheeler Wednesday after task force detectives allegedly recovered multiple images of child pornography on computers seized by investigators during an Oct. 22 search of Wheeler's Wilmington home and office.

Wheeler, 53, had stepped down as headmaster at Tower Hill School in Wilmington last week as the criminal investigation heated up.

The (Wilmington) News Journal reported the attorney general's office had declined Thursday to say whether any students at the private school were involved in the case. School officials had said previously they had no reason to believe any current Tower Hill students were part of the investigation.

The newspaper said Wheeler is unmarried and had adopted a young boy from Russia in the early 2000s.
