Football argument prompted man's shooting of son, sheriff says

MARTINSVILLE, Ind., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A man fatally shot his teenage son Sunday after an apparent argument over when to stop watching football, the Morgan County, Ind., sheriff said.

David Carrender, 49, was arrested on a preliminary murder charge after his son Wyatt, 19, was shot to death in the family's Martinsville home.

The father and son were watching football games in a local restaurant and argued over whether to return home. The father wanted to go but the son wanted to stay, the Indianapolis Star reported Tuesday.

The argument continued after they returned home, Morgan County Sheriff Robert Downey said, noting, "It appears the father retrieved a handgun and shot his son, it appears, six or seven times."

Downey added girlfriends of both the father and son were with the Carrenders when the shooting occurred.
