Man gets 30 years in prison for rape

ST. PAUL, Minn., June 2 (UPI) -- A judge has handed down a 30-year prison sentence to a man who raped a Minnesota woman while two of her young children were in the room, court officials said.

Tyron Joshua Thomas, 26, who lived in the woman's building in St. Paul, made no statement before his sentencing Friday for first-degree criminal sexual conduct, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

Assistant County Attorney Laura Rosenthal read the victim's impact statement in court.

The victim was asleep in her bedroom on March 23, with her two sons, ages 4 and 5, in her bed, Rosenthal.

She woke up to find Thomas in her bedroom.

"I begged for your compassion and for you to go," the victim's impact statement reads. "You simply said, 'Shut up, shut up, do you want to die?'"

Rosenthal said the assault included oral, vaginal and anal penetration.

The victim has since moved from the apartment and has had to seek therapy as a result of the assault, Rosenthal said.

Thomas was on probation for two first-degree burglary convictions at the time of the incident, the Pioneer Press said.
